September 6, 2005
Telemundo became the first Spanish-language media recipient of the prestigious Sentinel for Health Awards. In a ceremony hosted by the Hollywood Health and Society at the Writer’s Guild of America in Los Angeles, the network was honored for its groundbreaking breast cancer awareness health campaign and for its innovative and seamless incorporation of the initiative into the plot of Telemundo’s originally-produced novela ‘Anita No Te Rajes.’
“We are very honored by this recognition,” said Ramón Escobar, Senior Executive Vice President of Entertainment, Telemundo. “The industry and community are noticing our innovative way of creating social campaigns in our prime time programming and it’s a perfect example of the Telemundo difference and what it means to produce top-quality programming that empowers and inspires as it entertains. ‘HECHO PARA TI’ is really about making a difference in the lives of Latinos in the US.”
This initiative is one of many for Telemundo’s Community Connection Department, which works in conjunction with the Hollywood Health and Society, among other organizations, to gather information for its writers. After conducting extensive research on the topics that are of most relevance and importance to the Hispanic community, the network places its best efforts in highlighting the issues that can provide a positive message and service to its audience embedded in its programming.
A joint project of the renowned USC Annenberg Norman Lear Center, the Centers for Disease control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the Hollywood Health and Society provides entertainment professionals with accurate and timely information for health storylines, including free consultations and briefings with CDC and NCI experts. The Sentinel for Health Awards recognizes exemplary achievements in television storylines that inform, educate and motivate viewers to make choices for healthier and safer lives.
