Telemundo receives two prestigious Community-Awareness Awards.

Telemundo Communications Group announced that the network is being honored for its outstanding achievements in campaigns to create awareness among Hispanic communities. The network is being recognized by MANA for its Mujer de Hoy (Woman of Today) campaign and by Hollywood, Health & Society for the construction safety-themed novela “Pecados Ajenos” (The Sins of Others).

“We are very honored to be recognized by two such esteemed organizations,” said Don Browne, President, Telemundo. “Our founding principals at Telemundo are to inform, empower, educate and serve our Hispanic community.”

MANA’s 2008 Las Primeras Awards have named Telemundo the “Advocate of the Year” in recognition of the network’s Mujer de Hoy campaign. The campaign aims to empower Hispanic women living in the U.S. through education and knowledge. The multi-platform initiative focuses on the issues and challenges that U.S. Hispanic women face every day. The messages of Mujer de Hoy are delivered through real-life case studies on http://www.yahootelemundo.com/> , PSAs and segments on the network’s news programs, including “Cada Dia and “Al Rojo Vivo.” The campaign was launched in partnership with MANA & Hollywood, Health and Society.

MANA, A National Latina Organization, was founded in 1974 as the Mexican-American Women’s National Association. MANA’s original intent was to provide a voice for Mexican-American women at the national, state and local levels. Since then, the organization has expanded into a diverse group of Latinas in all areas of political, social and professional fields. MANA is unique since this makes MANA the single largest pan-Latina organization in the United States.

Telemundo has also received a Sentinel for Health Award for its original novela, “Pecados Ajenos.” The novela portrays an important message to viewers about construction safety. This is the third Sentinel for Health Award for network. Telemundo became the first Hispanic media organization to receive this award in 2005 with its breast cancer awareness campaign and won its second Sentinel for Health Award in 2006 for its diabetes awareness campaign and its originally-produced novela, “Amarte Asi.” Telemundo’s Community Connection Department works with the Hollywood, Health and Society, among other organizations, to gather information for its script writers. “Pecados Ajenos” is the result of a continuous effort to deliver high-quality programming to viewers that conveys a positive message on topics which have been identified as priorities to the Hispanic community.

Funded by the CDC, The California Endowment, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Health Resources Services Administration Division of Transplantation, Hollywood, Health & Society provides entertainment industry professionals with accurate and timely information for health storylines, including free consultations and briefings with CDC and partner experts. The project is based at the USC Annenberg School’s Norman Lear Center as a one-stop-shop for writers, producers and others in search of credible information on a wide range of public health topics.
