Telemundo announced that the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens have attracted new male viewers to the network. Telemundo’s 174 hours of Olympic programming provided the U.S. Hispanic viewers with their first opportunity to experience the Olympic Games in their native language.
Telemundo’s coverage, produced by Hispanics for Hispanics, attracted 171,000 new male viewers to the network; reaching 12.2 million total viewers – 46 percent of all U.S. Hispanic households. Weekend viewing, up 74 percent in adults 18-49 and 53 percent in households for the time period, was particularly strong.
“We are pleased that we have delivered on our promise; every Hispanic athlete that has excelled in Athens has been on our broadcast. Telemundo viewers have enjoyed our Olympic coverage, and the fact that we have attracted a good number of new viewers, is the best recognition we could hope for,” said Jorge Hidalgo, the network’s Executive Vice President of Sports.
The Olympic broadcast on Telemundo began on Aug. 11, two days before the Opening Ceremony. Telemundo’s programming schedule has included a wide variety of Olympic events that Hispanic viewers prefer; interviews with Hispanic athletes; unique stories geared to the U.S. Hispanic audience; and special programs from the network’s studios in Athens with renowned Sports Anchors, Jessi Losada and Andrés Cantor, the network’s official broadcast hosts. Telemundo will continue its coverage through Sunday, August 29th, the closing day of the Olympic Games. Telemundo’s Olympic endeavor has been the biggest event done in conjunction with NBC and its cable networks.
As part of this pioneering Olympic broadcast, Rudy Pérez, one of the outstanding creators of international pop music, wrote and produced “Que Viva la Unión,” which became the song of Telemundo’s broadcast of the Olympics performed by the Puerto Rican singer, Michael Angelo.
