U2 is ‘Telefutura’

Univision Communications Inc. announced that it has selected ‘Telefutura’ from among hundreds of entries by Univision Communications employees as the name of its new Spanish-language network.

Telefutura will launch in January 2002 as the nation’s third Spanish-language Network and the first non-traditional Spanish-language Network in the United States.

“The name Telefutura, which was suggested in part by two of our employees, is the most appropriate name for the new Network because it represents the future of Spanish-language television,” said A. Jerrold Perenchio, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Univision Communications. “This is an extremely exciting time for Spanish-language television, and for Univision Communications, as we continue to evolve and embrace all 35 million Hispanics living in the United States. By complementing traditional Spanish-language programming schedules, Telefutura will provide a much-needed viewing alternative to the millions of individuals that speak Spanish but currently spend all or a significant portion of their viewing time watching English-language television. We expect Telefutura to compete directly for viewers primarily with the many English-language networks.”

Upon its launch, Telefutura expects to immediately reach 80% of all U.S. Hispanic homes through its station group and affiliates. The Network will broadcast 24 hours per day, and will include news, novelas, talk shows, variety shows, movies and sports programming.
