Univision @ Cleveland.

Univision Communications Inc. announced the inauguration of the first Spanish-language television station in Northeast Ohio. WQHS-TV Channel 61, the network’s newest owned-and-operated full power station, begins broadcasting today in the Greater Cleveland area.

In direct response to the region’s explosive Hispanic population growth, up more than 50% in the last 10 years according to the 2000 Census, Univision will expand its presence in this flourishing community. The new station will deliver sports, news and entertainment programming on WQHS-TV Channel 61, operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, exclusively in Spanish.

Overseeing the management of Univision WQHS-TV will be newly appointed Regional General Manager Augustine Martinez. Prior to his appointment at WQHS, Martinez was General Manager of Univision’s flagship station, KMEX-TV Channel 34, in Los Angeles.

“The expansion of the Univision Television Group into the Greater Cleveland area is indicative of the company’s firm commitment to better serve the informational and entertainment needs of the growing Hispanic community of Northeast Ohio,” said Martinez. “I am excited and proud to be given the opportunity to lead Univision’s entry into this growing market.”

Univision purchased the Cleveland station from USA Networks in December 2000. WQHS-TV was formerly the local Home Shopping Network station.
