As part of the transaction, Univision will acquire full-power stations WLII-TV in San Juan (channel 11) and WSUR-TV in Ponce (channel 9), gaining access to all of the 1.3 million Puerto-Rican households. Univision will also acquire rights to WLII/WSUR, Inc.’s long-term affiliation agreement with WORA-TV in Mayaguez (channel 5) and long-term local marketing agreement with WSTE in Ponce, Mayaguez, Arecibo and San Juan (channel 7). Univision plans to broadcast all existing WLII/WSUR programming, including local news programming, sports coverage and movies. The acquisition, which is subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions, is expected to close in the first quarter of 2002. WLII and WSUR will become a part of Univision’s Television Group.
Commenting on the WLII/WSUR acquisition, Michael D. Wortsman, President Univision Television Group, Inc. said, “We are pleased to be entering the Puerto Rican market. WLII/WSUR, Inc. is a strong and profitable broadcast operation providing Puerto Ricans with quality entertainment, sporting events, and excellent local news programming. We look forward to working with the talented employees at Teleonce and Supersiete as we continue to expand our reach among the dynamic Hispanic population.”
“Our stations in Puerto Rico have created a news leadership and a commitment to localism that would make any station in the United States extremely proud,” said Raycom Media President and CEO John Hayes. “We wish the team at Teleonce and Supersiete the best of luck in their partnership with Univision. Univision could not be getting a greater group of people or better market than San Juan and Ponce.”
