Univision introduces ‘El Chapulin Colorado’ phone card.

Univision Communications announced the introduction of a new Dollar Phone card branded with “El Chapulin Colorado” (The Red Grasshopper).

“Building on the successes of our current branded phone cards, this new offering extends our already deep relationship with Hispanic consumers,” said Francisco Arenas, vice president, Univision Consumer Products. “We are excited to once again extend our licensing partnership with Dollar Phone and create products that connect with Hispanic America.”

“The El Chapulin Colorado brand is an extremely exciting addition to our product portfolio.” said Elisha Hisiger, senior vice president of Business Development and Marketing, Dollar Phone Enterprise. “The introduction of this iconic figure on the heels of our other extremely successful Univision product launches promises to be another blockbuster launch and we very much look forward to it.”

“El Chapulin Colorado” is one of the most popular and iconic television shows in Latin America created and played by legendary Mexican comedian Roberto Gomez Bolanos. The show’s success is largely due to the fact that it embodies many aspects of Latin and Mexican culture, while making a critique on the unrealistic image of superheroes. From the name of the show itself, to the slang and proverbs, Gomez Bolanos made an effort to reflect Latin culture. “El Chapulin Colorado” was conceived as the opposite of traditional American superhero — the character is a poor, fearful and clumsy man that in the end always overcomes his fears to defeat his enemies.

Univision Consumer Products recently launched a Dollar Phone card branded with its hugely popular morning show “Despierta América” (Wake-Up America), which is celebrating its 15th year on the air. During its first four months on the market, more than four million of the Dollar Phone Despierta América cards were purchased nationally. States driving sales included California, Texas, New York, New Jersey, Florida, Illinois, Arizona, Washington, Oregon and Colorado. Other Dollar Phone cards introduced to the market include a special edition phone card celebrating Univision Network’s sports entertainment program “República Deportiva.” Part of the promotional campaign to support the introduction of the card in May included an opportunity for first-time callers to record a question to be asked to Felix Fernandez, co-host of the “República Deportiva” show.
