Univision Live World Cup Coverage Delivers +54% More Viewers Than ESPN and ESPN2.

Univision Communications Inc. announced that coast to coast, sports enthusiasts are trading sleep for soccer, watching Univision and TeleFutura Networks’ broadcasts of the 2002 FIFA World Cup games in record numbers.

– Univision’s and TeleFutura’s live broadcasts and replays of the first 11 matches of the FIFA 2002 World Cup tournament
delivered 24% more Households, 27% more Adults 18-49 and 49% more Men 18-49 than Univision’s 1998 World Cup coverage.

– Galavision’s “Match of the Day” broadcasts drew 126% more viewers to the time period.

Univision’s live coverage of the 2002 games played delivered more viewers, regardless of language, than ESPN’s and ESPN2’s live coverage.

– In the first nine head-to-head matches, Univision delivered 44% more Households, 40% more Adults 18-49 and 54% more total viewers than ESPN and ESPN2.

Univision’s 2:15 a.m.EST/11:15 p.m. PST broadcast of the Mexico-Croatia match on June 3 immediately became the second highest-rated sporting event among Hispanic Men 18-34 and 18-49 this year, trailing only the Super Bowl. The Mexico-Croatia match even outperformed Game 7 of the NBA playoffs (Lakers-Kings), which aired on Sunday, June 2 in primetime.

According to Nielsen’s NSI total market service, Univision owned and operated stations in the key markets of Los Angeles, New York, Miami and Chicago delivered more Households than ESPN or ESPN2, regardless of language, in the first nine head-to-head matches.

– Univision delivered 642% more Households in Los Angeles than ESPN and ESPN2, 44% more in New York, 499% more in Miami and 312% more in Chicago than ESPN and ESPN2.
