Univision NYC sweeps Late News.

For the first time ever in the history of New York TV ratings, a Spanish-language late local TV news program has won the overnight ratings race against all other late news programs, regardless of language among every key adult demographic group. Friday night, April 28, 2006, Univision’s late local news in New York, the 11 pm edition of “Noticias Univision 41” (Univision 41 News) with anchors Rafael Pineda and Denisse Oller, seen on WXTV Channel 41, New York’s premier Spanish-language TV station, won the ratings race among viewers aged 18 to 34, 18 to 49, and 25 to 54 years old according to Nielsen Station Index (NSI) Local People Meter (LPM) overnight ratings. Immigration news dominated the “Noticias Univision 41” broadcast on the first Friday night of Nielsen’s May “sweeps ” period. Sweeps are the four, contiguous four week periods annually in which the audiences of TV stations nationwide are measured in order to set advertising rates.

“Noticias Univision 41” was watched by 117,000 New York TV viewers aged 18 to 34 from 11 pm to 11:30 pm Friday night, 244,000 viewers aged 18 to 49, and 223,000 viewers aged 25 to 54 to win each audience category against both New York’s competing 11 pm news programs and its 10 pm news programs, regardless of language.

The 11 pm Spanish-language newscast on Telemundo’s WNJU Channel 47 was second among viewers aged 18 to 34 with 49,000 viewers. Among those aged 18 to 49, second place went to WCBS-TV Channel 2 with 159,000 viewers. And among those aged 25 to 54, WABC-TV Channel 7 was second with 222,000 viewers. WNBC Channel 4 and WCBS-TV Channel 2 tied for third place with 206,000 viewers each aged 25 to 54. New York’s 10 pm newscasts were not factors in the races.
