Univision presents ‘Deadly Hatred’.
May 22, 2009
The Univision Network announced the broadcast of “Univision News presents: Deadly Hatred” (Noticias Univision Presenta: Odio a Muerte), a gripping investigative news special that analyzes the growing number of hate crimes against Hispanics in the United States. Presented by Univision news anchor Maria Elena Salinas, the show will highlight some of the recent cases that have made headlines, including the beating death of Mexican immigrant Luís Eduardo Ramírez by four Caucasian teenagers in the small town of Shenandoah, Pennsylvania. The special broadcast of “Univision News Presents: Deadly Hatred” will air on Tuesday, June 23, at 10pm ET/PT (9pm Central).
According to the FBI, from 2003 to 2007 hate crimes against Hispanics increased by 40%. “Univision News Presents: Deadly Hatred” features interviews from experts who explain why the actual figure may be many times greater than what the authorities acknowledge as fear prevents many witnesses and victims from coming forward.
Univision News put this theory to the test, recreating a violent crime on the streets as hidden cameras captured the reaction of witnesses. While some people immediately called the police, others simply refused to get involved. Why did they react that way? The surprising results will leave everyone asking: What would you do if you witnessed a crime of this nature?
The show will also present testimony from hate crime victims who share their experiences on how these events have impacted their families and daily lives.
In addition, after none of those involved in the high-profile case of the beating death of Luís Eduardo Ramírez in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania were convicted of murder, the local Hispanic community and national Hispanic organizations were outraged and demand justice. “Univision News Presents: Deadly Hatred” goes beyond the headlines to find out what really happened that fateful night with interviews from Mr. Ramírez’ girlfriend (and mother of two of his children), witnesses who were there the night of the incident but were never called to testify in the trial, and other experts who have followed the story closely for a year.
The show will also take a look at the questionable actions taken by local authorities in the investigation of the murder and what is being done at the Federal level to bring these teens to justice and strengthen the laws that protect victims of hate crimes.
