Univision Shakes Up ABC, CBs, NBC & FOX

In an historic broadcast season thus far, the Univision Network has beaten all of the ‘Big 4’ networks 19 times, drawing more total viewers 18-34 than ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX, to become the #1 network in primetime in the country on those nights. In addition, on nearly two out of every three nights in the current season to date, Univision has displaced at least one of the ‘Big 4’ English-language networks in primetime among the same demographic. Univision has ranked as the #2 network 26 times, the #3 network 41 times and the #4 network 51 times.

On numerous occasions throughout the season, Univision has delivered more young adult viewers than new episodes of hit shows such as ‘Lost,’ ’24,’ ‘The Apprentice,’ ‘O.C.,’ and ‘CSI: Miami,’ among others. For example, a recent broadcast of Univision novela ‘Rubi’ drew more than 3.1 million Adults 18-34, compared to NBC’s ‘The Contender’ and FOX’s ’24’ that each drew 2.7 million, and ABC’s ‘Supernanny’ and CBS’s ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’ that each drew 2.2 million. So far this season, Univision has averaged 1,362,000 Adult 18-34 primetime viewers, up 36% from last year. The ‘Big 4’ English-language networks have averaged 2,040,000 Adult 18-34 primetime viewers this season, showing no growth over last year.

“For the last several years our audience levels have exploded, and this season Univision has truly entered a new era; in addition to beating all of our Spanish-language competitors by huge margins, we are now consistently beating the biggest English-language networks as well, drawing a larger number of viewers from the total U.S. television audience, Hispanic or non-Hispanic,” said Ray Rodriguez, President and Chief Operating Officer, Univision Communications Inc. “Our ability to cross-promote across a broad family of media assets coupled with the astounding growth of the U.S. Hispanic community and our company’s 100% commitment to Spanish-language content, has made us a regular in the ‘Big 4’ and a formidable competitor in the overall broadcast television landscape.”

Alina Falcon, Executive Vice President and Operating Manager, Univision Television Network, said, “These numbers illustrate two important points — the traditional ‘Big 4’ is no longer the only place to reach the nation’s largest television audience and that young Hispanic Americans are increasingly turning to Spanish-language television. What’s even more impressive is that Univision is able to deliver so many Adults 18-34 relative to the English-language networks despite the fact that the Hispanic Adult 18-34 universe is 12 million, whereas the English-language networks have a universe of 65 million 18-34 year-old television viewers from which to draw.”
