Univision, UniMás and Galavisión to simulcast the premiere of “La Viuda Negra”

For the first time in U.S. Hispanic media history, Univision, UniMás and Galavisión will unite to simulcast the world premiere of the new dramatic series “La Viuda Negra” (The Black Widow) on Sunday, February 23, 2014, at 10 p.m. ET/PT (9 p.m. Central) before settling in to its regular 10pm Monday through Friday time slot on UniMás.

Starring Mexican actress Ana Serradilla, “La Viuda Negra” is based on the true “ripped-straight-from-the-headlines” story of Griselda Blanco, A-K-A “The Cocaine Godmother,” who ruled the Miami drug trade in the 70s and early 80’s.

In the build-up to this historic television event, Univision’s investigative newsmagazine “Aqui y Ahora” will air a special on Griselda Blanco at 7 p.m. ET/PT on the Univision Network. This one hour special edition will shed some light on the obscure life of Griselda Blanco.  Her former lover reveals the Cocaine Queen’s greatest fears, and detectives who chased her for years recall how ruthless the petite woman was with her enemies. The investigation will also share new insights on the legendary figure, her crimes and how she was able to elude capture for so many years.

Born in Colombia to a struggling mother of humble means, young Griselda grows up on the backstreets of Medellín, learning to use her charms and wits to help them survive. Joining a gang of delinquents, she falls in love with the leader and begins her life of crime. But later, after a painful betrayal, she kills him…thus earning her title as “The Black Widow.” Griselda then gets involved in the local drug trade, becomes a pioneer in smuggling it to the U.S., and moves her operations to NY and, eventually, Miami. There, she becomes the undisputed “Cocaine Godmother.” As her story unfolds, she falls in love and marries three more times, eventually killing each of her unfortunate husbands, and living up to her deadly nickname.

“It’s a fascinating look into the dark world of a woman loved by some, hated by most, and feared by all that will build on UniMás’s commitment to deliver the best Spanish-language alternative programming to U.S. audiences,” said Alberto Ciurana, president of Programming and Content for Univision Networks. “By premiering her amazing, true story on our three leading networks and the Aqui y Ahora Special, we are creating a first of its kind event in Hispanic media.”
