Univision Communications Inc. was recognized today for excellence in journalism as its news program “Primer Impacto” received the prestigious Edward R. Murrow award for the second time. This marks the third time the Univision Network has received this national honor.
Ray Rodriguez, President and Chief Operating Officer, Univision Networks, said: “The Edward R. Murrow award is one of the most coveted in television news, and we are honored to once again make history as the only Spanish-language network to receive this national award. It’s a great testament to the skill and dedication of our news team, which for more than 20 years has provided consistently balanced and culturally relevant coverage to the millions of Hispanics living in this country. We are pleased and gratified to receive this recognition, which reflects our commitment to filling an important information need in the US-Hispanic community.”
“We are extremely proud that ‘Primer Impacto’ has received the most respected award in electronic journalism for the second time in recognition of our integrity and outstanding achievement in providing news and information to the Hispanic community,” said Maria Lopez-Alvarez, Vice President and Co-Director of Univision Network News. “This award reflects our news division’s dedication to delivering only the highest quality news and information that our loyal viewers have come to expect from all three of our Networks.”
Univision’s weekday newsmagazine “Primer Impacto” received the Edward R. Murrow award from the Radio-Television News Directors Association for Best TV Network News Series for its series entitled “Disposable Kids” (Ninos Desechables). The series aired for three consecutive days in November 2002 and presented a hard-hitting, investigative report of the horrific execution of children accused of crimes by vigilantes in Honduras. In 1998, “Primer Impacto” won the Edward R. Murrow award for its series entitled “Hell on Earth” (Infierno en la Tierra).
