Univision’s KMEX-TV wins two prestigious awards.

Univision’s Los Angeles flagship station KMEX-Univision 34 and its local news “Noticias 34” (News 34) at 6:00 p.m. was the recipient of two very prestigious awards this past week.

KMEX-Univision 34 received a 2009 Regional Edward R. Murrow Award in Writing for their 2-part series “Cosechando Penas” (Harvesting Pains) and was named Station of the Year at the 2008 Press Photographer’s Association of Greater Los Angeles (PPAGLA) Awards.

KMEX-Univision 34 won for its local news writing, two-part series “Cosechando Penas”. The series was shot documentary style non-stop for 20 hours on location on farmland near Bakersfield, California. The dramatic series called attention to the working conditions of the farm workers that continued even after several on-the job deaths due to heat stroke on California farmlands in 2008. 

Additionally, KMEX-Univision 34 was honored with the title of Station of the Year at the 2008 Press Photographer’s Association of Greater Los Angeles (PPAGLA) Awards and KMEX-TV’s Juan Hernandez was awarded with the title of 2008’s Videographer of the Year.  In total KMEX-Univision 34 took 17 honors for work by their talented staff including, Juan Hernandez, Arturo Quezada, and Azucena Varela.

The Radio-Television News Directors Association’s (RTNDA) Edward R. Murrow awards honor outstanding achievements in electronic journalism and recipients demonstrate the spirit of excellence that Edward R. Murrow made a standard for the broadcast news profession.  Further, the regional award winners automatically become eligible for the national awards competition in June.

Additionally, KMEX-Univision 34 is the nation’s #1 early local news during first quarter 2009 and was ranked as the #1 station across the nation among all Adults 18-49, regardless of language, for the year of 2008.
