April 14, 2002
Univision Communications announced that its Chicago owned and operated station, WGBO, has received the Advertising Council’s Silver Bell Award in recognition of its exceptional community service.
The distinguished award was presented on March 26, 2002 to Luisa Echevarria, Director of Community Relations, WGBO, during a ceremony held at the Television Bureau of Advertising’s 2002 Annual Marketing Conference in New York.
Univision has a long history of serving the Chicago community. Since its launch in 1994, WGBO has produced and aired numerous Spanish-language public service announcements relating to community issues such as education, healthcare, voting and the arts. WGBO is also committed to its work with El Valor, a 30-year-old organization dedicated to early childhood development, and the U.S. Hispanic Leadership Institute, which promotes voter registration with their “Get Out the Vote” campaigns. In addition, in the wake of September 11th, the station developed special news segments promoting fundraising events and blood drives.
“Univision is honored to be the recipient of the 2002 Silver Bell in recognition for our dedication to the Chicago community through our extensive community outreach activities and public affair projects,” said Bert Medina, Vice President and General Manager, WGBO. “Receiving this prestigious award underscores our continued dedication to educating our community by increasing awareness of social concerns.”
“Commitment to our community and public service has become a Univision hallmark,” said Luisa Echevarria. “This award is a great accomplishment and we are very proud to be recognized by such a prominent and influential organization.”
“We are proud to honor WGBO with the Advertising Council Silver Bell Award for their unwavering commitment to public service,” said Peggy Conlon, President and CEO of the Advertising Council. “The Advertising Council Silver Bell recognizes media outlets that go the extra mile to deliver life-saving messages to the nation and spark social change, and WGBO’s support makes the station an ideal recipient for the award.”
