Telemundo Los Angeles announced that Vicky Gutierrez, reporter for Telemundo 52, was recognized by New America Media and the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication for her report “Farm Kids,” in the “Best in Community Reporting” television category.
“We are extremely proud of Vicky Gutierrez for having presented this report where she showed us the cruel reality and alerted us of what is happening in our own community,” said Esteban Creste, Vice President of News for Telemundo 52.
“Farm Kids” showed the harsh truth of children of immigrant families that work in the agricultural fields of California. The idea to do this report came from a study conducted by the United Nations that spoke of this phenomenon. The report showed the obstacles that these children face: labor violations, as well as human rights violations such as lack of health insurance and wages dictated by labor laws.
