March 26, 2006
The Weather Channel is establishing the first national weather radio network for Spanish language listeners with the launch of The Weather Channel Espanol Radio Network on April 24. The new service of localized weather information in Spanish will reach audiences in Miami, Atlanta, Orlando, and Portland, OR. The Weather Channel Radio Network provides weather forecasts in English for 530 stations throughout the country and has a branded presence in 42 of the top 50 markets.
“The number of Spanish-language radio stations across the country has doubled in the past 10 years to 700 terrestrial stations,” said Harold Lewis, vice president and general manager, The Weather Channel Radio Network and Newspaper Syndication. “We are pleased to add our well-respected brand of weather information to the burgeoning number of media outlets targeting the Spanish-speaking population. And, since a significant portion of the Spanish-speaking audience lives in areas often threatened by severe weather, we believe the addition of TWC Espanol Radio Network will be valuable within their respective communities.” Lewis noted that listeners who were underserved in the past “will now be well-informed as we approach another potentially dangerous hurricane season.”
The Spanish language audio service will provide up-to-date forecasts during key drive times and also when severe weather is a factor in the lives of residents. Charter affiliates of The Weather Channel Espanol Radio Network are:
WSUA-AM, Miami, Florida WRUM-FM, Orlando, Florida KWBY-AM, Portland, Oregon and three sister stations in Atlanta, Georgia, WASO-AM, WXEM and WLBA.
