WNJU-TV Telemundo Growing Fast In NYC.

At the conclusion of the July 2002 sweep, WNJU has emerged as the fastest growing station in New York and the number one Spanish language station in the Early Fringe according to Nielsen Media Research.

On a year-to-year comparative basis, WNJU was fastest growing television station in the New York DMA — in Primetime, the 11PM News and sign on-sign off — compared to ALL television stations in the market. WNJU was the No. 1 Spanish-language station in the important Early Fringe daypart (Mon-Fri 2-6PM), and WNJU achieved record NSI ratings in eight different shows.

From 2-6P, WNJU achieved record ratings for three of the five shows in the time period: Sala de Parejas, Laura en América, and the brand new (three-month old) Al Rojo Vivo. In a time period previously dominated by the competition, WNJU’s lineup of court, talk and news magazine shows has proven to be a winner among Hispanic households. , Laura en América and Al Rojo Vivo have proven to be so strong they beat similar style programming on WCBS, WNYW and WWOR. Sala de Parejas registered a 2.1 rating/6 share, up 111% versus July 2001. Laura en América pulled a 2.5 rating/6 share, an increase or 40% over last year and ) Al Rojo Vivo rated a 2.7/6 share, up 60% over the program from last July. In Early News, Noticiero 47 was also at record levels, gaining a 1.8 rating/4 share, up over last July and from May 2002.

For Primetime, two novelas, Daniela at 7PM and El Clon at 10PM, were also hit record-high ratings for WNJU. Daniela posted a 2.2 rating/4 share, an increase of 10% over the July 2002 novela airing in that time period. El Clon (from GloboTV in Brazil), with its relevant story line and cross-cultural appeal, came in at a 2.8 rating/5 share, 153% ahead of the 10PM novela airing last July. Overall WNJU is taking 35% of the 3 station Spanish-language audience in Primetime, up from 30% last July, when there were only 2 Spanish-language stations.

WNJU’s Noticiero 47 Noche (Mon-Friday 11-1130P) hit its new high point with a 2.0 rating/4 share, up 88% from last July and 21% from May 2002. WNJU is the only station to gain audience during the 11PM news time period.

In the Monday-Sunday sign on-sign off time frame, WNJU was the fastest growing station — compared to all stations — in the New York market. WNJU’s 1.2 rating/4 share was a record high performance and a 48% increase over the July 2002. WNJU was severely affected by the tower situation in New York and the movement of the station’s antenna to the Empire State Building at the beginning of the month allowed for a better signal to be received by the entire Hispanic market in New York.

Michael Velazquez, WNJU’s National Sales Manager remarked, “We are extremely pleased with the station’s record-setting performance during the July 2002 sweep. We not only hit best ever ratings in many shows and time periods, but also showed significant Spanish-language share growth in these and other key time periods. WNJU has made great inroads against the competition, laying the groundwork for the upcoming 2002-2003 season. Our new partnership with WNBC will bring a host of changes and innovations that will make WNJU an even stronger station for the Hispanic Community New York.”
