Despite significant growth in retail markets, salespeople in the electronics industry are expected to benefit little from this growth during the coming decade. The number of people employed in retail sales now tops 4.5 million and employment in this sector is expected to grow 12% in the coming decade, according to the U.S. Department of Labor’s 2006 Labor Statistics. In fact, retail sales is projected to be one of the leading work categories providing the new jobs – approximately 557,000 – between 2006 and 2016 but salespeople in the electronics industry will reap few benefits from the increase.

Univision experiments…and it worked.

It’s not every day that Univision undertakes major collaborations for special events, and the upcoming “Premios Deportes” is a nice case study. Unlike “Premios Juventud” or the long-running “Premio Lo Nuestro,” which Univision produces entirely on its own, “Premios Deportes” is a collaboration between Univision and Tecate beer. I had the pleasure of attending the taping in L.A., and while we didn’t have the benefit of a fully-edited, continuously-running program, the content will make for a very nice program.

Back-to-School spending to show slight gains for 2008.

In a nationally representative study of mothers with school-age children by the Marketing to Moms Coalition, fully 20 percent of respondents claimed that their child’s school offers a service that allows students to buy supplies directly from the school. And whether it’s a local school or a local retailer, mothers show a strong preference for spending their back-to-school dollars in “brick-and-mortar” environments that offer one-stop shopping.

PC-TV Tuner market to get boost from European & Asian Shift to Digital TV.

The adoption of digital PC-TV Tuners will accelerate in Europe as Digital Terrestrial TV (DTT) services continue to expand there. Asia, China and India will present strong growth opportunities. North America is expected to see a surge during 2009, when analog TV is cut off, and new mobile digital broadcast TV (MDTV) services are introduced by major US TV stations. The high-tech market research firm In-Stat. cautions that the uptake of PC-TV tuners is not guaranteed, as they face challenges from a wide variety of options, consumers now have to use computers to gather and view a wide range of video content.

The current, troubled state of the airline industry is nearly matched by the branding of major U.S. carriers, according to a study conducted by brand strategists at Stealing Share, a brand development and research firm.

Our parents’ loyalty programs were simple programs with simple rewards: you buy something, and there was a degree of personalization in the product buying experience. Today virtually everyone has a credit card they are building points on, an airline, hotel, rental car, book club, coffee shop, but most of the larger loyalty programs were driven from service-based businesses with perishable products or services. Today, it is confusing to define a loyalty program.
