Cachao: The Last Mambo wins Best Tropical Latin Album.

Only three months after winning his second Latin GRAMMY® in the category of “Best Traditional Tropical Album”, the great Cuban bass player and composer Israel López “Cachao” won a GRAMMY in the 54th annual edition of the most prestigious award in music. Posthumously, his last album, “Cachao: The Last Mambo”, was chosen in the category of “Best Tropical Latin Album”. The annual GRAMMY® ceremony was held tonight at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, and televised on CBS.

On December 14, organizers of one of the nation’s premier live music events, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, revealed the lineup for its 2012 extravaganza. At the same time, smaller stages provide local and regional artists enormous exposure by offering them a prime platform to share their Zydeco and blues sounds with music fans that may never have been exposed to such styles. Mobile Posse, Inc. announced that the its latest survey, polling nearly 175,000 consumers, revealed that radio and mobile music listening are neck-in-neck.

Music business association NARM and The NPD Group released findings of a joint study that examined the ways consumers discover new music. The report indicates that while music discovery is still vital to the industry, it applies differently to various consumer groups, and it has changed significantly since the organizations last studied the topic in 2007, as television and social media and other digital services have emerged as major influencers.

Cue the Music: Driven by Digital, Music Sales up in 2011.

Music sales in the U.S. are up 1.6 percent in 2011, according to The Nielsen Company, as digital album and track sales saw dramatic growth through May 8. While physical albums saw a decline in year-over-year sales from the same period in 2010, digital album and track purchases went up 16.8 percent and 9.6 percent, respectively. Digital retailers received more than half of all music transactions, propelling a 12.4 percent growth in sales over last year.
