Market research company AYTM found that 57.8% of US Facebook users had not mentioned a brand in their status updates as of October 2011. More heartening for marketers is that just 0.5% of Facebook users posted only negative mentions about brands on Facebook. More often, they reported commenting on brands in a positive way (25.3%) or with a mix of both positive and negative mentions (16.4%).

Not all social media users are convinced that connecting with companies on social sites will be more than a passing fad, according to research from Conversocial, but those that do seem to expect that the connection will be two-way.

Entravision Communications Corporation announced that Mario M. Carrera has been promoted to the newly-created position of Senior Vice President of Spanish-Language Television, overseeing and managing all of Entravision’s Spanish-language television properties. Carrera previously led Entravision’s radio, television and interactive assets in Colorado as the Vice President and General Manager for 8 years.

Founded in 2010 as a social commerce company with celebrity-curated products, BeachMint owns and operates four vertical online retail brands: JewelMint, BeautyMint, StyleMint and ShoeMint. Each of the ecommerce/social commerce sites looks to celebrity spokespeople as tastemakers. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, for example, work with StyleMint to develop exclusive pieces of clothing and to promote the brand’s latest styles. To further spur sales, the company encourages customers to take profile quizzes so it can better recommend products to consumers, who then sign up for subscription-based memberships.

In 2011, US mobile commerce sales (including travel) surged 91.4%, to reach $6.7 billion. Continued strong growth will boost sales to $31 billion in 2015. It’s Ho! Ho! Ho! time, party time and looking to next year.  So with that said, here are my Top 10 pet peeves for 2012. 1- Professionals in our Industry need to understand the need to return calls and e-mails.  It is just proper business etiquette, even if there is not an opportunity to do business.  People need communication and have to deliver communication back to their people.  Two-way street.  Return your own calls, don’t have you assistant do it.  Nobody, and I mean nobody is that important or that busy.

The E.W. Scripps Company completed its acquisition of nine television stations from McGraw-Hill Broadcasting. The company announced its intention to acquire the stations on October 3, 2011.

Marketers in various industries have different goals for their social media efforts, from direct response to branding to everything in between. And a vertical’s regulatory environment can lead to vastly different approaches and levels of engagement. But on the consumer side, one concern remains paramount: customer service.

As social media marketers become more and more accountable for the return on investment of their programs, some are also starting to see the long-term results of campaigns that work.

Kantar Media reports that more than 272 billion Free Standing Insert (FSI) coupons were distributed in 2011 which represents a 6.5 percent decrease in activity versus 2010. This decline in FSI coupon activity follows two consecutive years of annual increases of 8.0 percent in 2009 and 7.2 percent in 2010. Despite an overall decrease in FSI coupon activity, retailer promotion pages within the FSI vehicles recorded a 30.7 percent increase to more than 17.0 billion pages in 2011, continuing the significant annual increases in retailer promotion activity which began in 2007.
