SBS’s ‘El Papichulo’ swims across Hudson River.

Spanish Broadcasting System and WSKQ La MEGA 97.9 FM announced the hit morning show, “El Vacilón de la Mañana,” was transmitting live on Thursday August 30 from the banks of the Hudson River. During the broadcast, DJ Leo Miches Amador, also known as “El Papichulo,” bravely swam across the river.

Internet Radio has a Future.

Earlier this year a considerable shadow was cast over the Internet radio industry. SoundExchange, the organization tasked with collecting and distributing digital performance royalties, set a royalty fee regime for webcasters that many in the industry thought so prohibitive it would put smaller Internet radio stations out of business.

SBS-MEGA TV signs contract with DirecTV.

Spanish Broadcasting System, Inc. (SBS) announced that it has signed an exclusive contract with DIRECTV, the nation’s leading satellite television service provider. Beginning Oct. 17, MEGA TV will be available nationwide on the DIRECTV Más platform on channel 405.

Lawenda joins Univision Communications as President of Advertising Sales.

Univision Communications Inc. announced that advertising sales veteran David Lawenda has joined Univision in the new position of President of Advertising Sales. Lawenda will oversee advertising sales for all of Univision’s media assets, including the Univision, TeleFutura and Galavision Television Networks; the Univision and TeleFutura Television Groups; Univision Radio; and Univision Online. A top priority for Lawenda will be to help brands connect with Hispanic consumers by developing customized integrated marketing programs that harness the full power of Univision’s portfolio.

Telemundo’s WKAQ-TV honored by Overseas Press Club in Puerto Rico.

Telemundo announced it received top honors at the 69th Annual Overseas Press Club Awards held at the Hotel San Juan in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The network’s affiliate station WKAQ-TV, Puerto Rico, was awarded high honors in five “Best News Broadcasting” categories.
