89.6 Million U.S. Singles define new Nuclear Family.

“Father Knows Best” make way for the rest: America’s 89.6 million singles head over half of America’s households – 50.3%, according to the 2006 U.S. Census. Young in age and outlook, singles share a love of media and socializing that can reward marketers who realistically depict the unmarried lifestyle. Activities from shopping to blogging are influenced by singles’ parental status, age, and other factors, according to Singles in the U.S.: the New Nuclear Family, the most recent report from market research publisher Packaged Facts.

Nielsen launches National Homescan Hispanic Consumer Panel.

The Nielsen Company announced that it will launch a national Homescan Hispanic Consumer Panel, with a research sample of 11,000 households. Nielsen also said it will expand its existing Homescan Hispanic Panel in Los Angeles from 1,500 to 2,500 households to provide Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) manufacturers and retailers with more detailed views of the needs, preferences and shopping habits of Hispanic consumers.

U.S. Census Reports Minority Population tops 100 Million.

The nation’s minority population reached 100.7 million, according to the national and state estimates by race, Hispanic origin, sex and age released today by the U.S. Census Bureau. A year ago, the minority population totaled 98.3 million.

A client and I attended the 2nd annual immigration rally in Chicago- we were mainly attracted to it by the fact that there would be 150,000 Hispanics participating, and we believed marching along would be helpful in making some sense of the myriad of quantitative data we had recently garnered on Hispanics. The experience was incredibly educational in that it allowed us to confirm things we knew about the market (albeit it wasn’t exactly a representative picture of the marketplace due to the nature of the rally and given that most of the participants were Hispanic Dominant) and led to the generation of some hypotheses regarding the changing dynamic in the marketplace.

Spanish-Language advertising rose 14.4%.

Total advertising spending for Spanish-Language media reached $5.59 billion in 2006, increasing 14.4% over 2005, according to Nielsen Monitor-Plus, the global advertising information service of The Nielsen Company. Every medium reported increased growth with the greatest dollar increase seen from Network TV ($364 million). Spot Radio had the largest increase in terms of percent change (31%), followed by Cable Television rising 20% over the year before.

Kids between the ages of 2 and 12 years old spend more than a quarter of their leisure time doing two or more activities at the same time. Favorite pastimes among the sample group included reading, using the computer, spending time with friends, listening to music and watching TV.
