Music marketing and brand experience agency Momentum Worldwide has conducted a research study aimed specifically at identifying the connection between live and digital music behaviors. Among the findings is that millennials, defined as people ages 18-34, want to see brands in the music space and enjoy seeing them there.

Global Digital Music Sales Catch Up to Physical, Finally

There’s no stopping the music industry’s digital transformation, based on recent research. According to data from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), digital music revenues worldwide rose nearly 7% last year to hit $6.85 billion, tying physical sales in share for the first time, at 46% each. The remaining 8% was from performance rights and synchronization.

Last night I had the treat of attending an intimate concert with Gloria Estefan at the New World Center in Miami. She performed songs from her upcoming album, The Standards, accompanied by the Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra under the direction of Shelly Berg. It was a perfect evening of timeless music beautifully and impeccably performed at a world-class performing arts venue. And it was great to hear Gloria sing better than ever.

As Internet-radio listening rose among this age group, listening to AM/FM radio, which now accounts for 24 percent of music-listening time, declined 2 percentage points. In the 36-and-older age group, by contrast, Internet radio accounted for just 13 percent of music listening, while AM/FM radio dominated listening methods with a 41 percent share.

Turn it Up: Music Fans could spend up to $2.6B more Annually.

Music is the universal language that fans speak fluently. In fact, a recent Nielsen study found that 40 percent of U.S. consumers—those classified as fans—are responsible for 75 percent of music spending. These fans, who spend between $20 billion and $26 billion on music each year, could spend an additional $450 million to $2.6 billion annually if they had the opportunity to snag behind-the-scenes access to the artists along with exclusive content.
