SBS & MEGATV announce ‘HISPANOS UNIDOS’ a benefit RADIO/Telethon To Aid Victims Of Hurricane Sandy

In response to the widespread devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy, Spanish Broadcasting System, Inc. (SBS) and 22 major market radio stations and national television network, MegaTV will air a live benefit radio/telethon starting Wednesday November 7th, 2012 at 6 a.m. (ET/PT/CT). The three day-long radio/telethon will target the collection of food products, clothing, medicine and household goods for distribution to the victims of Hurricane Sandy

The radio/telethon “Hispanos Unidos” (Hispanics United) will be broadcast from local SBS studios in the major cities of New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Houston, Miami and Puerto Rico. It will air live nationally.

U.S. Retailers forecast 3.7% increase in 2012 Holiday.

Despite uncertainty around how the Presidential Election will impact the economy and consumer spending, retailers are confident headed into the holiday season. According to a recent BDO USA survey, chief marketing officers at leading U.S. retailers expect a 3.7 percent increase in holiday comparable store sales. This marks the survey’s most optimistic forecast since 2007 when CMOs projected a 5 percent increase in comparable store sales.

The English Divide.

Most Puerto Ricans may not speak the world’s language of business ‘very well,’ but at least they want to. You’ve probably heard of the Digital Divide, or the significant gap between workers and citizens able to easily work with computers and digital devices, and those who can’t. With so many jobs nowadays demanding digital skills, the divide has essentially locked a high number of Puerto Ricans out of the labor force.

How did ABC-Univision end up in the wrong gateway?

When I first heard about the joint venture between ABC and Univision my reaction was one of positive intrigue.

Here were two major media companies about to go after the ever-burgeoning bicultural, bilingual Latino. And I was pleasantly surprised to hear that the new network would be in English. But when I heard the new network would be based in Miami I began to wonder whether the parties were really serious about their stated mission. While Miami can certainly benefit from getting 350 new jobs (”new” would have to be suspect since Univision is based in Miami), I thought that establishing the new venture in Miami might actually undermine the entire proposition.

Worldwide Internet Ad Spend grows more than Other Media in First Half of 2012.

Advertising is on the rise around the globe and across nearly all media types, according to Nielsen’s Global AdView Pulse report. Gains in areas such as Internet (+7.2%), radio (+6.6%) and TV (+3.1%) offset the 1.3 percent decline in magazine spending in the first half of 2012, leading overall advertising investment to be up 2.7 percent.

Three Things I Think I Think About 2013.

For sales in 89 categories across five key departments (food, beverages, alcohol, health/beauty and homecare), Nielsen is forecasting spending for November and December, 2012 to reach $98.3 billion. Nielsen expects dollar sales to increase 2.3 percent and unit sales to remain generally flat (0.1%).
