Ad Spend by Sector: Consumer Goods Marketers Spend Big(ger)

Despite moderate global growth in advertising spending, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies continued to invest—and invest more—according to Nielsen’s quarterly Global AdView Pulse report. The largest sector by ad spend market share, with roughly a quarter of all dollars spent (25.1%), FMCG saw a six percent increase in ad spend in 2012 through September. FMCG was joined by telecom, media and automotive as the top sectors for year-over-year ad growth.

With an aging population and a generation of young adults struggling to achieve financial independence, the burdens and responsibilities of middle-aged Americans are increasing. Nearly half (47%) of adults in their 40s and 50s have a parent age 65 or older and are either raising a young child or financially supporting a grown child (age 18 or older). And about one-in-seven middle-aged adults (15%) is providing financial support to both an aging parent and a child.

U.S. LGBT HHs make 16% more Shopping Trips than the U.S. Average.

American same-sex partnered households have significant spending power. In fact, same-sex partnered households make 16 percent more shopping trips than the average U.S. household each year (173 average shopping trips vs. 149 average shopping trips for total U.S. households), according to a recent Nielsen report measuring the shopping habits of U.S. lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) households.

Homeownership Rates Among Foreign-Born.

A new report, Homeownership Among the Foreign-Born Population: 2011, released, examines the homeownership and renter status among foreign-born households based on data from the 2011 American Community Survey.

NAHP President Zeke Montes Passes.

Zeke Montes is legendary for his commitment to the National Association of Hispanic Publications (NAHP) – and no one will or could serve more terms as President than the six terms he served. He was elected as the second NAHP President in 1986 and served three terms early in the NAHP history when board members were elected to one year terms (1986-1989). His many accomplishments from this period include the NAHP joining HACR and other key national organizations, the NAHP Group Buy program grew, the start of what is today the José Martí Awards, the NAHP gave it’s first scholarships, and our first convention in Mexico.

A Nation of Immigrants.

The number of unauthorized immigrants living in the U.S. also grew during the last decade, rising from 8.4 million in 2000 to 11.1 million in 2011. However, this population peaked at 12 million in 2007, then fell to 11.1 million in 2009. It has remained at that level through 2011, the last year for which an estimate is available (Passel and Cohn, 2012).

Overall attendance to new release movies was on par with a year ago (6.8 movies per person on average, compared with 6.9 in 2011), while moviegoing increased among Hispanics (12%), people aged 25-34 (7%), youths 12-17 (3%) and males (3%). Although there were slightly more female moviegoers than male moviegoers in 2012 (51% and 49%, respectively), men accounted for 55 percent of theatrical attendance.

3.4% Increase in Retail Sales for 2013.

The National Retail Federation released its 2013 economic forecast, projecting retail industry sales (which exclude automobiles, gas stations, and restaurants) will increase 3.4 percent*, slightly less than the preliminary 4.2 percent growth seen in 2012. The subdued forecast comes on the heels of a holiday season that went head-to-head with Washington’s political wrangling over fiscal concerns, shifting consumers’ spending plans downward. In the end, holiday sales in 2012 grew 3.0 percent.

Majority Of U.S. Consumers watch TV and access the Internet at the Same Time.

Nearly 60 percent of U.S. consumers still prefer to watch their favorite shows and video programming on their TVs, but they also want their smart phones and tablets by their side so they can be online and multitask, according to the KPMG International 2013 Digital Debate survey, which polled more than 1,000 consumers in the U.S. and 9,000 globally
